I just finished watching "Rebel Without a Cause" and I'm a little misty. I don't know how many times I've seen it, and I know what's coming, but it always wears me out. I'm on a movie watching binge right now, so I think I'll move next to anything Hitchcock. Well, except for "The Birds". Maybe "Stranger on a Train", "Rear Window", or "North by Northwest". Might as well, while I'm all tensed up anyway, right?

Of course, during "Rebel", I kept thinking of the song "Rock On", so I had to download it.

I downloaded the David Essex version, which I think is the original from the 1970's. I would never have got it out of my head so best I just go ahead and get it over with.

And while I was on iTunes anyway, I went ahead and downloaded "Morning Train (Nine to Five)" by Sheena Easton, because something my cuz said last night reminded me that I had loaned this album (yeah, I'm that old), to someone way back when and they never returned it, and I'm still kind of mad about it. Get over it self, it was only a silly album. Yes, but it was one of my favs, and it wasn't just the one album, there was another album, and two very cute Wilton cake pans plus four or five Wilton yearbooks loaned at the same time, and the person moved and never even tried to return them. Ok, I'm better now.

PS: I am reliving this day from about three years ago, so if a handful of you think you have seen this post, you may have, because it is from my secret blog. It's so secret I barely go there anymore.

What a terrible blogger I am. I should be made to do community service blog work. Feel free to post about how terrible a blogger I am. I do have reasons, but I'm not going to tell you what they are. Someday, but today is not that day. When I do get back to being a better blogger, then you will want me to pipe down a bit. I would show you a picture but I haven't taken them off my camera, so I better do some community service photography work also. I've not crafted any items either. I don't have time for all the work I should be doing!!

But I do love y'all dearly and will be back to annoy and say stupid things soon. Don't we all hope!

I have to wash the car and go to the doctor, but I'll be back later when I find the instructions that I have already compiled, with photos. Or I will just have to make new ones. We'll see.

Meanwhile, here is a card design you can have. I usually do not pre-design cards, I just make them up as I go along, but I wanted to use some new Spellbinder Label dies, and I put the word MOM in the oval for Mother's Day, and the bird I used is different. But, you get the idea. Feel free! Right click and save yourself a copy.

PS: It's tomorrow and I haven't put the instructions yet. I should know better. Will be a little later.

“Take a Trip Through the Fairy Door (If Only In Your Imagination)”

I picked up this cute wooden fairy door on a clearance table at one of the craft stores. I covered the bricks with scraps of paper, colored everything else with Bic Mark Its, added the embellishments, and of course the Fairy. She is a digi-stamp from Dardi at www.dtsart.com. I colored her with Prismas and Stickled her wings and cut her out so she could admire her Fairy Door. I think everyone should have a Fairy Door in their house. How else are the Fairies going to come and go?

There is some blog candy which I forgot to photograph but I will and revise this post with the photo.RIGHT NOW!! It is a little treasure chest full of tidbits so you can make your own Fairy Land. Remember when you make large square cards to mail they take a little extra postage because they are square, and the USPS likes rectangles. But in some cases square cards are just worth it, as in this case with this darling angle holding the cardinal.

I made these for my friend Lisa. The church is colored with Copics (I ran out of my sky-blue color), and the church base is the size of an ATC. Cards are 4.25x5.5.

And I sort of took it upon myself to revise Pastor Rick's postcard that he sends to visitors. I had taken this photo at the Calcasieu River, near his church, not knowing this is the exact spot was where he baptizes, until he later told me when he commented on the photo.

Repeat from my secret blog from last year, and no, you can't go there. Unless you're my DVD boyfriend. Or Joe Flanigan.

It was, folks, a simple time. ABC, CBS and NBC. That's all you needed to know. The schedule stayed the same from week to week. Albeit the holiday variety show specials were slipped in there, along with holiday movies like "The Ten Commandments" around Easter, and "The Wizard of Oz" around Christmas. Growing up, we could always get two of the channels to come in nice and clear; for the third, someone would always have to go outside and twist the antenna pole around. This usually involved two people, one who got to stay inside the house and yell out the window to the one turning the pole. "No. More. Good. Yes, no, back. More. Yes, that's it. STOP!" (Ironically, not a string of words you would have heard on TV back then.) No channel hopping happening here, as the pole would have to be turned again. And there was no remote. Sometimes, when there was enough wind, it would blow the silly antenna around and the TV screen would be turned to snow. Usually right at the good part.

The dramas, the comedies, the movies, and the variety shows (the MTV of the early years?) all aired the same day of the week, at the same time, for half the year, until the dreaded repeats. Once the repeats started, we could choose one of the other channels and watch that offering, unless we wanted to watch a repeat, which was not usual. Before the days of VCR's and TiVo, repeat season was an opportunity, a window into another network, of things unviewed. New seasons always started in September. No Ifs, Ands or Buts about it. September. We looked forward to September. The first week of September meant memorizing your TV watching schedule, and that was good for six months by golly gee.

I find it hard to watch TV these days. I forget there are more channels out there to choose from, although I'm trying to expand my horizons and go above Channel 13 on the dial…er, the digital thingamacallit. My house has basic cable. That is enough channels for me to get confused about without adding in all of the premium channels. How does anyone find time to figure out what and when something is on all those channels, much less find the time to watch. It is all so confusing. Season Premiers can now start any month of the year, episodes can be repeated within days, sometimes the same day. A season is not necessarily 24-26 episodes, it could be 12 or 13. And I've seen hiatus' so long that I have actually forgotten what the show was about or that it even existed. Think (Battlestar Galactica.) Note to self, better look that up at the TV Guide dot com to make sure I don't miss it when it finally returns. Of course I've forgotten everything that happened sometime last year, when we were put on hold.

I have attempted to make a conscious effort to learn the nuances of modern TV watching, but I have to admit, it is not going so well. I have learned to move above the Channel 13, and now I go all the way up to 27 (Stargate Atlantis and almost anything else on SciFi is good for me), and beyond, up to 46 (The Closer and Saving Grace on TNT). The sad part is, every time I find something on one of these mysterious double-digit channels, and I like it, it gets canceled. I'm still, after six years, smarting at the cancellation of Firefly (FOX, which is Channel 10 here, and within my antiquated viewing range, so I was always able to find it). I've almost made it a habit to not watch anything new, and if it doesn't get canceled, then get the DVD's. Back in the day, we hung in there, and new shows got a chance. Of course, there were only two other competitors, and coming in at #3 on the ratings chart didn't sound so bad, did it?

These days, my favorite TV watching is in the form of boxed DVD sets. I don't have to worry about when or which channel something is aired. Of course, I have to wait, but the simplicity of watching the DVD's far makes up for the wait. However, I usually just pick up a book (I almost said good book, but we know that's not always the case) which I can enjoy anytime I want, for as long as I want, and then if it frustrates me too much, unlike a TV set, I can throw it.

International Talk Like a Pirate Day is Approaching: Are you prepared?

No, it is not a costume. I married a pirate, Cap'n Rupert Roughnight, so I have to dress like this all the time. And since International Talk Like Pirate Day, is fast approaching, here is some more unsolicited advice from someone who knows. I am aware you did not ask, but you realize that it is for your own good. 'eed yer warnings!

You have probably heard that pirates are generally unwashed and slovenly. Completely untrue. Cap'n Rupe takes at least two showers each day, and his clothing always has to be pressed and tucked, with nary a raveled thread or loose button. Let me ask you, have you ever pressed those billowy shirts on a ship? The Lady Ayte Fifth Gale is a top of the line ship, but still it is not easy. In addition, my pillager undeniably smells pretty. They be neat clist pressed an' tucked ya swabbie!

A little known fact about a pirate is that they are laundry freaks. This is necessary because of the amount of wet towels and worn clothing generated from #1. When you live with a pirate, take precautions when you shower and hold on to your towel. The Cap'n has been known to yank it right out of my hands before I have finished drying my delicate alabaster skin because he is scrubbing a load of pirate laundry at the same moment I am trying to dry myself. Do you know how many times I have had to drip dry? A pile of dirty laundry is a no-no. Give me yer towel or keel haul th' plank ya horn swogglin' scurvy cur!

Pirates are notorious for digging through the trash before it actually goes out for the mates to pick up. Now, instead of throwing something overboard, I hand it directly to Cap'n Rupert (or Rupie as I sometimes call him) and just bypass the drink. This particular attribute did come in handy once. I said to Cap'n, "I wish I had a 'whatever'." He promptly went into his quarters returned with the 'whatever' and informed me that I had thrown it away five years ago. Oh, well, that was only the one time. Digs in th' trash an' saves stuff ya scurvy dog whut deserves the black spot!

As indicated in #3, pirates have excellent memories. I reckon an' dasn't ye forget it!

Pirates are both exceptionally frugal and exceedingly generous, especially my Rupie. Things like stopping the ship in the middle of hostile waters because he sees a perfectly good treasure chest that he must salvage are second nature to him. Pirates excel at bargain shopping; I have plenty of these, and these, and what am I supposed to do with 32,000 yards of this? Yes, Cap'n is very generous. Hself t' found thingy ya swabbie who ortin' t' be keel hauled!

Pirates usually expect you to read their minds. When they do ask for something, which is not that often, the pirate usually does not give you all the information necessary to complete their request. It is sometimes hard to decide whether to ask them what they really want, and risk the wrath of the pirate, or just do it the way you would do it and risk the wrath of the pirate. Some days, pirate wrath is inevitable. I wants what I wants ya landlubber!

Pirates do like to party and have a good time. They like to be the center of a social circle. They like attention—look at the way they dress! They like their grog. Aaaaargh!

Pirates cannot sit still and relax for more than a few minutes. Cap'n Rupert always has to be doing something, and you never know what that might be, so be prepared for anything. It must be something in the buccaneers. Get ou' o' me way ya lily livered scallywag!

Expect to be summoned by the name of wench and kissed a lot. When a pirate kisses his wench, you naturally become very backward bendable, as to be draped over his arm, and a wind always appears to make your very long naturally curly hair flow back from your face just so. Do not get me wrong, this is typically a good thing. In addition, go ahead and wear those off the shoulder bodices; it saves lot of garment mending in the long run. Kiss me ye wench, and now, fore I give ye a dunk in th' drink!

Pirates always expect to have the last word. Which is why I blog. Aaaargh!

Everyone did a wonderful job on these cards. I loved them all. I wanted this swap to be tall skinny cards because I have an abundance of #10 envelopes, and want to use them up. So I made a coordinating envie for all of the cards. The theme was not butterflies, which most of us used, it was actually a selected color combo, with black and/or white okay to use along with the color combo.

How to Cut a Bloom Box/ Explosion Box on Cricut Expression*

3.5 Outside: I used George and Basic Shapes. If you do not have this cartridge there are squares on lots of other carts. The cut is just two rectangles welded together, sized at 10.5 x 3.5.

I usually put a cut in the unused corner spaces, it could be something used to embellish the box pages. I figure I'm right there anyway, so do it. If you can't think of anything, you can never go wrong with flowers, hearts, brackets, tags, etc.

Lid: 5.5 x 5.5

To make the lid, score 1" from all sides, turn in all four sides and tuck the tabs on each side to the inside and adhere. I'm sure it will make more sense when you see it.

*If you do not have an Expression, and instead have an original Cricut or Cricut Create, that only cuts 6", or 5.5 wide, (I can't remember), you can still cut your rectangles. You would cut two of each size, center in a cross and glue the bottoms together. This would give you a double bottom. Most of the time we don't want that, but in this case I think it would be okay.

On making the box, it's pretty self-explanatory, cut the pieces, score the folds and adhere all bottoms together. Make your lid to hold the box together.

I embellished covered tin with a hand stitched fabric flower.

How to: After Easter (and Christmas), you can get these little tins for .25, and it doesn't hurt that they come with a big chocolate cookie in each. Give these to the neighbor kids!

These tins have embossed lids so I could not cover them with paper, so I used fabric. I cut two circles of traditional quilt batting to put on the top in order to disguise the bumpy embossing. You could use one layer of thicker batting also.

I used spray adhesive to adhere the two layers of batting to the top of the tin. Wet glue tends to flatten the batting and leave it bumpy, and I was trying to disguise the bumps.

I made a circle pattern to cut the fabric by tracing around the lid and adding the amount I wanted the fabric to hang down and cover the bottom of the tin.

Use the pattern to cut a fabric circle.

I used a thin coat of tacky glue to adhere the fabric on top of the batting. Place a few small drops and use a small artists paint brush to spread it very thin.

Run a bead of glue along the edge of the lid, but before you do, cut a piece of elastic to fit around the top and stitch the ends together (see next photo). You could use a large rubber band, and I also used large pony tail holders before I ran out of them.

Secure the fabric with the elastic.

Cut a piece of 1/4" double fold bias tape and glue it over the elastic.

Ta da! Embellish as you please.

The following takes place 15 minutes prior to Tracker leaving for Mobile:
Tracker: You know today is Steve's birthday.
Kopperhead: You know I never remember birthdays.
Tracker: Do you have a card for him?
Kopperhead: You should have told me sooner.
Tracker: Well, it's the same day every year, you should remember.
Kopperhead: Well I didn't, but if you wait a few minutes I can make a card.
Tracker: I have to leave in 15 minutes?
Kopperhead: Ok, it will take me 10.
Tracker: I'll just stop at the store and buy one.
Kopperhead: Not on my time! No store bought card is coming from this household!
Tracker. Hurry.
Kopperhead: OK, package up a dozen of the carrot/raisin mini bundt cakes while I make the card. I know which stamp I will use.
Tracker: Hurry
Now it is 12 minutes until he has to leave.
You notice how we so easily shift the blame back and forth. I should just go ahead and make next years card while I'm in the mood. Or mode. Either.

I grabbed the magazine that happened to be close at hand and decided to copy a card from the magazine, since I didn't have time to think of anything on my own. I was inspired by a card from Just Cards! Birthdays! 2010. It has a section with masculine birthday cards, and I picked the first one I saw to use as inspiration. It is on page 72. I changed it a little. I can't post a photo of the magazine here because I do not have permission.

I did not use double-sided cardstock for the shirt, which would have been a little quicker, but I used what was already piled on my desk so I didn't have to search the paper stacks.

I made the shirt out of cardstock and lined it with the tropical print paper. Instead of stamping Happy Birthday on the shirt itself, I stamped it on a strip, folded it and sewed it in like a tag. I machine stitched (luckily coordinating thread was already on the sewing machine) around the edges, then inked the edges. I intended to mat the inside Got Cake? panel but forgot. By this time Bill was standing over me waiting. I also added buttons. A shirt needs buttons, doesn't it? Even if they are crooked. I shoved the buttons back in place (glue was still wet) after photographing, then the card was out the door.

I wanted to stamp the bar code stamp on another small square and sew it into the shirt also, but just ran out of time. But I got this done in 8 minutes. If I can do it that fast, anybody can! Oh, disregard the lovely paper clip holding the card closed.

I hand cut a piece of the tropical print paper for the back of the shirt, since I didn't use double-sided card stock it was white on the back, with the sleeve seam showing, where it was glued on.

These little meandering mini albums are easy to make.

These are sized 6"x6" overall, with each square area measuring 2"x2".
You can make any size that works best for you. I like the 6x6 because you can cut 4 bases from 12x12 card stock.

You can use double-sided card stock for the album and not insert the inside pages.

For the inside pages, cut a rectangle of regular weight paper 1/4" less than the height of one section 1/4" less than the width of two sections. For this example, each section is 2x2", so a double-spread inside page would be 1.75" x3.75". You will need four per mini-album. Any nice, lightweight paper will work. Use something with a pattern already on it and you won't have so much tiny decorating to do.

Score on all your pre-measured lines, or in this case 2" in from all sides.

Cut on scored lines as shown.
The photo above shows the inside pages. Embellish with tiny photos and ribbons, flowers, pins, brads--all the usual stuff.

It will make more sense where to fold and where to insert the pages once you have it in your hand.

After cutting and folding, fold your lighter weight paper pages, if using inner pages, in half and adhere into the valley crease of each section. You should have 4 valley folds which will be where you adhere the pages.

Attach ribbons or twine to hold the mini album closed. You can also decorate the back cover, which will be blank (the inside of your selected card stock) after folding.

Life 365 for 2010 ????

You know that project that was started by a certain famous scrapbooker last January 2009, and spread and became all the rage. Well, that lasted about four days for me. So this new year, I am going to make myself a "Once Upon A Time" book, and even though I might not have photos, I am going to recall events and stories and memories from my lifetime. I am already noting the ideas, one per day, on my 2010 planner. I've been done scrapbooking all my pics for a couple of years now, and loving cardmaking and paper art, and of course writing (and typing--you know I can't shut up). My scrapbooks are rather old fashioned as I began scrapbooking before it was a real thing, and supplies weren't abundantly heaped upon us from every direction as they are now. I had to scrounge and come up with ideas to decorate pages, some which are very lame. But I won't change them, they are what they are.

Another goal is to get albums made for all of my ATC sets that I've received from swaps.

And make art for my walls.

And Bill told me that if I brought one more sheet of cardstock into this bungalow, he was probably going to have to reinforce the building. Well, not really, when Bill builds something, it is going to last. And, since he is an electrician, there are 30 outlets in my bungalow. There are 20 alone under my large table, where I had my computer area when I had my business, and I asked for lots of outlets, and I got 'em. When Bill builds something, there is nowhere in the room where you can stand and not have access to an electrical outlet.

And since I do not really have anything interesting lately to post, I'll show you this picture. It was a couple years ago, but I want to smile like that again.

Little Aprons

Little aprons are made from Simplicity pattern 2748. I sewed all of these by hand, but you can use sewing machine. I like hand sewing, and would rather do the hand sewing rather than change the color thread on the sewing machine so much. Anyway, here's a few tips that might help with this or any other small sewing project.

Pattern: Before cuttting out the pattern pieces (and yes, I trim away all tissue along the cutting lines before cutting on fabric), fuse them to some heavy duty fusible interfacing (fusible on one side only). The small pieces will hold up much better for multiple cutting, and the interfacing kind of grabs the fabric and you do not need so many pins.
There are 8 apron versions in the pattern, so far I have used only this one, which is my favorite.
For this version, you can cut two complete aprons from one fat quarter. The pockets and ruffle call for contrast, but I cut all from same fabric, two at one time, and then when I had a lot cut, I mixed up the pockets and ruffles to coordinate.
I cut both aprons at once by folding the fat quarter so that it is four layers. However, since piece "A", which is the apron front, only one piece is needed for each apron, whereas all other pieces need two of each pattern piece. So I folded the fat quarter so that the very end was only two layers of fabric, enough space to cut two fronts.
The pattern instructions directed to use 1/4" double folded bias tape and cut it down the center and press it again into double fold. I used the 1/4" double fold bias tape just as it came out of the package and it worked just fine. I won't say that turning the curves around the small shoulder area is easy, but once you make a few you will find a way that works for you. For the top shoulder curves on view "A" (apron pictured), I held it into a point instead of trying to curve it, and skipped across the very end to continue sewing the bias on the opposite side. When finished, I went back to the pointy area and sewed it closed, so it is a point instead of a curve, but since I sewed a button there it really didn't matter.
I used ribbon instead of making a bow out of bias tape, since that was a real pain.
Since the bias tape and several pieces, like the tie ends and the back straps need to be pressed, and I like to sit on the couch and sew while watching TV (Star Trek Enterprise right now...my favorite of the Star Treks), I can't very well have an ironing board and iron in here, so I use a hair styling flat iron; works great. I also have that little ribbon iron that I got free with a purchase of something last year, and it works well also, but it gets very hot when left on and you need to use a pot holder to hold it. The hair flat iron is made for holding so it doesn't get to hot to handle.

Day 10/365 TwentyTen--Wishing Dreams Came True

I do wish dreams would come true. Last night I dreamed that JoAnn's had a funny kind of sale going on. If you brought in an item they would give you a new item in exchange, even if your item was half used spools of thread, or scraps, or whatever sewing related. I didn't know that until I got to the store, back in the fabric area. I happened to have in my purse several spools of thread, some scraps of fabric, some sewing needles and a few other things. (Dreamland is wonderfully accommodating, isn't it.)

The Lady at Sewing Cutting Table proceeded to inventory my lot, and gave me in return, a zipper, a yard of fabric, some fat quarters, and some Gutterman thread (which I love), and a purple trimmed in gold fleece zip up hoodie, which when I looked at closely, also had pants with it, and shorts with it, and LSU embroidered on the front, in size Large. I said wow my husband is going to love this. Then she gave me a ruler and a light bulb for my sewing machine, along with some strips of fabric, which when I looked at I figured they were something some other person had turned in for exchange, but I didn't care. I left that store with a deal.
Then I woke up.

This just isn't right. Yes, I'm wimpy. It was 16 degrees last night. Fountain froze. Probably damaged the pump even though we tried to keep water moving with the hose. However, the pool didn't freeze, so I can't go ice-skating. Do not know where I would acquire ice skates anyway.

Day 2/365 - Mom's New Counter Tops

Why did we get Mom* new counter tops for Christmas? You know there is a story behind everything, so here it is. Her current counter top was 32 years old. They were avacado green. Remember those days? You may be too young to remember that. It was a period of harvest gold and avacado green, followed by the dusty rose/country blue, and then the seafoam green/peach era. Glad that is over, as I rather prefer the HG and AG.

Anyway, 32 years ago Mom was cooking chicken and rice for the dogs. Yep. True Story. It was legend.....wait for it......dairy. (HIMYM). She started a kitchen fire. So the cabinets you see were built by Bill after the kitchen fire. I wish we could replace them, or I could get in there and spend a week scrubbing and conditioning them. Maybe I'll go when Bill has to go take some stuff over there next time and do that. There is 32 years worth of cooking grime in that kitchen. We also got her new flooring (vinyl) but no photo of that, it's just off white square pattern.

Day 1/365 - Happy New Year Twenty Ten

Last night was the first NYE in a decade that we didn't host a party in the Dog Pound. Many of our gang's children have gotten older (as have ours), married (not our), or had children (not our youngest set), so, kind of sadly, we do not get together as much any longer.

I slept right through the transition to TwentyTen. Bill watched a few football games with some friends.

I've got all the makings for a traditional Southern New Years Day Feast: cabbage, black-eyed peas, cornbread, spiral ham and sweet potatoes. And I've got a ton of eggs in the refrigerator so there will be lots of deviled eggs.

If the tale is true, what you do on NY day is what you will do all year. So I guess since all kids are out of house, I need to learn to cook again. While not cooking, I will craft, and make my "resolutions".

I thank God that I am here to see 2010. My prayer is that our leaders put their priorities in order: God, Family, Country. It does matter.

Roses Cut From Garden Today, Nov. 29, 2009

Bill's rose garden had an abundance of roses in bloom today. On the west side of our home, we had to build up a section of dirt because of the stupid builders, and you know who you are. Bill made a wall with those wall making stones, and since roses need a raised bed to properly produce, it was the ideal place. As it happens, the clothes dryer vents out into this area, so for about five feet on either side of the vent, roses blook all year long. There is three yellow buds that look like they will pop tomorrow.

Back in the 70's I made dolls and quilts, and more dolls and quilts. I have given away 100's of dolls. This is only a portion of the ones I still have. Today I gave them a little Tide stain pen treatment, hung them on my clothesline and sprayed them with Fabreeze, so they hung around getting a little sunshine.

So, my first inventive use for one is as a mini pincushion on my paper crafting desk, so I don't have to keep going back and forth (as if 12 feet is a problem) to fetch my sewing machine pin/needle cushion.

My next idea is to cut little holly leaves with Cricut, then cut some of those pretty long straight pins that are called quilting pins, and come in beautiful colors; cut the red ones off to about 1/2" and stick the holly branches on them. Or use the MS branch punch and tiny buttons, or Stickles.

And then.....now I have all sorts of idea, but just have to find where I put those silly things, cause you know I don't throw anything away.

Asian Frame Faith Hope Love

I found this cute kimona frame at Old Time Pottery yesterday, for a dollar. The jacket was also a dollar. I used my Faith Hope Love Asian stamp. Each is stamped on black cardstock with gold Brillance ink, then matted several times. The openings are 2" x 2". Now I need to find a place to hang it.

Kopperhead's 4" Tic Tac Toe Squares

I made some of these, and received others in a swap I'm in. (My dear swappers, don't worry, I'm going to make another using yours also, just haven't received everything yet. I'll put the credits up then.)

Squares are 4x4 with tic tac toe design. Couldn't be any easier and the design options are endless.

How to: I used a 12x12 wrapped finished canvas. I colored the sides with the broad tip of a Sienna Copic, which you can't see in the photo, but just thought I would mention.

Glue, I Mod Podged, the square to the canvas, two coats of Mod Podge, and ready for hanging. Easy!

This wasn't planned, but notice how the "bliss" inchie overlaps onto the skeleton. I would like to say I planned that, but it just happened.
I needed a gross of inchies, and I didn't think I had that many that I had made myself, so I made some spare, but I ended up with lots left over. And since I like borders on things, I used a similar inchie for each corner, and then on each edge alternated with a free hand doodled inchie and a Celtic design inchie.

How To:
I covered the edges of the mat outside the 12x12 grid with paper, using Mod Podge matte to adhere it. I cut a pretty corner piece using Storybook cartridge for the corners. The next step is to adhere the inchies, I used Mod Podge for this also. I planned out the inchies that were sets, and placed them in various places at random, then I filled in any gaps with individual inchies that weren't part of a set. When dry, I put another coat of Mod Podge.

Once the final coat was dry, the corners turned up a bit and needed to be flattened, so I placed the mat on a 4" wide round jar (my Mod Podge jar actually) and left it overnight, and the corners, not being supported, flattened out. I must credit this idea to my husband the engineer.

I cut a 13x14 piece of stiff corrugated cardboard and glued (MP'd) to the back of the mat. I placed my sewing basket on top of it for pressure, and let it sit overnight so the glue would be nice and dry and everything would be flat.

How to make the crochet lace with dangly buttons:
I saw this trim at Hobby Lobby and liked it a lot, but it was $12.99 per yard. I bought 1/4 yard (9 inches) with a 50% off coupon. (Yeah, I'm cheap, I know.) I figured I could make it myself.

Ingredients: Lots of time and patience. Buttons of assorted size and colors, or all the same if you want it that way. Flat crochet trim. Baby sized rick rack. Bias tape, 1/4" double fold. The piece I purchased did not use the bias tape, but I thought it would be easier to make using it, so I did.

I calculated how much a yard would cost me to make, time not included, by calculating the yardage price of the crochet lace trim, buttons, rick rack and bias tape, and it came to $3.27 per yard. For this project, I needed 13 inches, so I made lace and bias tape 14 inches to have some to wrap around the back.

Cut the rick rack into various lengths from 2" to 4". I just cut randomly. Now, this is the fun part, oh, and Jello optional. Thread the rick rack through one of the holes in the button and make the ends even. On larger buttons it is rather easy to thread through the hole. On some buttons I dipped the end of the rick rack into glue, rolled the end between my fingers, let it dry a minute, and it was easy to insert. On the very smallest buttons, there was no way that rick rack was going in there, so I had to fake it. I just sewed the ends of the rick rack together through the hole, then put a dab of glue. I like to use quilting thread when hand sewing, it's a little stronger than regular thread.

Once I had my buttons on the rick rack, I sewed them to the lower half of the bias tape. Then I cut the ends of any rick rack that was extending above the fold so that it would be even. I folded the tape over and basted it together encasing the ends of the rick. Next, I sewed the bias tape on the back lower edge of the crochet trim.

I like to hand sew, so I enjoyed this, but you could just as well pin the rick racked buttons and sew across it with machine, as well as sew the bias tape to the crochet trim. Or you could even glue it as I'm sure that would work also.

I Mod Podged the completed trim to the bottom of the mat, folding 1" ends to the back. I added a piece of braided trim above the dangly buttons just because I liked it.

The ribbon hanger is just that, a length of ribbon with a bow and two extra tails which I added yet another button to end of each. I like buttons.

To "sign" my art, I used Storybook cartridge and combined two letters to make the "K" look similar to the way I sign it by hand. It is 1", since this is an inchie project, and I covered it with Black Diamond Stickles.

Did I forget anything? You, too, can do this if you are as crazy as I am!
